We spend a lot of time ruminating about the past or worrying about the future. We also spend a great deal of time thinking about how things could be. From a young age, I loved living in a fantasy world. I’d dream about attending boarding school — just like Malory Towers or St. Clare’s. I’d dream about meeting my favourite cricketers both as a teen and as a journalist. In fact, my imagination was so wild, I’d dream about meeting Adam Gilchrist and becoming the love of his life. Yes, even though he was married and had kids.
Some dreams helped me chase goals. Like the dream of living in Australia. It was something I wanted since I was thirteen or fourteen and I made it happen with the help of family and a bit of luck. But there are other times I notice that my dreams remain just that — dreams and fantasies. I wonder how things could be if something I yearn for turns out but rarely do I put any effort in it. At other times, the dreams are there and I know what to do but fear gets in the way of acting.
Take for instance, my dream of writing. Sure, I keep some of it alive by having this blog and a writing blog. But my dream extends to being a published writer — either freelance or fiction. The problem is I’ve been plagued by anxiety that’s so crippling, I haven’t even started to live this dream. A writer writes. A freelance writer pitches. I don’t do either. I have started stories that have gone no where. I have jotted ideas that I’ve done nothing with. It’s all because of a fear I know well enough.
So it’s time for me to stop just dwelling on those dreams and to start living them. I’m going to start by committing to NaNoWriMo next month. I have a brief outline for a YA story but I need to flesh it out more and get to know my characters better before the 1st of November. I’ll start thinking about the freelancing from December and commence pitching in the new year. I think that sounds reasonable and not too daunting.
What dreams do you dwell on that you forget to live?
