Fun and laughter in May

Given that it’s a new month, it’s time for a different theme for Flourish Inside Out. In May, we look at amusement. Amusement is the positive emotion experienced during play – either physical, rough-and-tumble play, or mental play in the form of games, puzzles, and humour.

I realised some time ago that I seemed to have lost my sense of fun. I used to laugh a lot. I used to make jokes. But then, somewhere along the line, I got serious. I still laugh but I don’t think it’s as much as I used to. So I’m hoping to laugh more this month. To look for the fun in things.

Benefits of humour

  • Laughter is good for your physical health – It boosts immunity, reduces stress, relaxes muscles and helps prevent heart disease (Source)
  • Laughter is good for your mental health – It increases energy, reduces mental tension, helps you stay focussed and accomplish more (Source)
  • Humour helps to improve your mood (Source)
  • Laughter helps strengthen relationships – It helps us connect with others, makes us more attractive to others, enhances teamwork and defuses conflict (Source)

How to cultivate humour and amusement

  • Smile more
  • Count your blessings
  • Spend time with fun people
  • Play more
  • Laugh at yourself
  • Find your inner child

My plans to cultivate humour

  • Go watch some stand-up comedy
  • Continue to laugh at work
  • Spend time with people who make me laugh
  • Watch some sitcoms
  • Stop watching the news
  • Play board games
  • Sit on a swing or slide
  • Look through old photos that make me laugh

So there you go. While I do laugh at work thanks to colleagues with a dark sense of humour, I don’t do it much elsewhere. Hopefully, with my above plans, I can continue to do so.     This is a delightful idea. I like the action plan for making time to laugh daily! I know it seems ridiculous to some but life does overwhelm you and you forget to laugh. Here’s hoping you have a barrel of laughs this month!

    Happiness is a habit like all others .We need to practice being happy.Otherwise, life can get boring pretty quick!I try to make a list of all things which make me very happy .These I take out in my brain when things get tough!.Weird ,but works for me.#mg #mondaymusings

    I so agree about humor. I avoid people with dark, dour outlooks on life. They bring me down. Good suggestions for how to stay happy.
