Introspection Reflections

Scare yourself #FridayReflections

February 10, 2017

When life gets busy, we tend to run on autopilot. We wake up, go to work, get home, cook, clean, relax and sleep. And then we repeat it all over again. If you’re like me, you probably like routine. But routine can get a bit tiring and we need a break every once in a while.

But sometimes, that break doesn’t always have to be a big holiday. Sometimes, doing something new, something different can be just as exciting and break the routine.

Back in 2013, I made a motto to get out of my comfort zone. And I well and truly did. And thanks to that, 2013 became a great year. I would be nervous but then excited. I met new people. I visited new places. I did new things. I went camping for the first time. Hiked most weekends. Went on a solo trip for a week. And it was all enlightening and exciting. The best bit? I grew as an individual. By facing my fears, I became more courageous.

Then life became mundane again. A bit stagnant. Until last year when I did something that scared the crap out of me. I moved. I left everything familiar behind and moved to start over. The newness of some things is still exciting. But like I said earlier, life gets in the way. Routine continues. And so I realise I need to do something more than just work, read, write, the beach and the familiar. I’ve been meeting new people but I also need to explore more.

When I try and think of how I can do things that scare me, there’s not much I can think of. Meeting new people is definitely on that list and I try to do that at least once a month. I talk to strangers but honestly, that no longer scares me like it used to.

Maybe the time has come to reflect on what I can do every day or at least every week that scares me. So I can continue to grow. Continue to soul-search. Continue to live.

Do you do things that scare you?

Do share!

If you are new to Friday Reflections, here’s what it’s about. It’s the end of the week, you’re probably exhausted with work, and all you want to do is sit back, put your feet up, sip on some fancy cocktail or wine, and write away.

I like your style. I reckon I don’t do enough things to scare me… But I have had cancer – that was pretty effing scary! And I’ve given birth – scary AF! Still, I could do more. Get out and about like you do. I’m such a homebody!

Sanch, this was an enlightening post for me! More like, I realization I should say. I just realized that the most fun I’ve had in life is when I went out of my comfort zone and did things I wouldn’t dream of. But somehow it takes quite a bit of nerve and resolve to do those things, which is why I probably returned back into the safety line I’ve drawn around myself. Hmm, scaring yourself, something to chew on…

Moving and meeting new people would scare me. Instead, I am becoming more politically aware, and taking small steps to take public stands. For this introvert, that is scary.

Love it, Sanch. Pushing our limits is what growth is all about. You’re a brave lady, I’ve always told you that. Starting anew can be crazy. I’m hoping to start something new soon and pretty scared!
