Surviving the Mountain Lagoon Loop via Colo Meroo and Tootie Creek

On the weekend gone by a group of 19 of us walked the Mountain Lagoon Loop while camping along the Colo river on Saturday night. Apart from one person, none of us had done this hike before. All we knew was what we had read about it online. We started the hike on Saturday around 10:45 thanks to a few of us being stuck in traffic en route to the starting point.

Day 1 was pretty good…while we did get a bit lost and went off track, we also battled steep descents and had to be very careful through most of it. Our reward for getting through all of that was a swim in the river at the official campsite. However, given that the next day was supposed to be more difficult, we decided to continue forward and camp at another site. Our campsite was quite lovely. Right next to the water which meant another swim. I love the evenings cooking our meals and just relaxing around a camp fire and talking. As the sun set, the world around us was even prettier with stars shining in the night sky and the moon lighting things up. A couple of us decided to sleep outside the tent in our sleeping bags as it wasn’t all that cold. However, in the middle of the night, around 2 a.m. I decided to head back to the tent after hearing a wild pig grunting for the third time! Let’s just say I wanted to get some sleep…which I did!Β

Day 2 involved a lot of walking and we knew that. We just didn’t realise how much of it wasn’t on a properly marked track! Even though we had done half the walk the day before, nothing prepared some of us for Day 2. We started off just before 8 a.m. and had to wade through the river, walk barefoot on sand {or in thongs}, hop across rocks and fight some rapids, beat our way through the bush — all in 35 degrees or more heat! I was spent. I was done. I was fucked. And this was by noon. And apparently, we still had steep climbs to go. I am usually quite good with going uphill {the downhills kill my knees!} But some of the climb up hill was so treacherous, it scared the shit out of me. Also, despite drinking a whole heap of water, I didn’t need to pee at any stage. Which should have been a warning sign of things to come. Eventually at about 4 p.m. after struggling heaps, we reached the fire trail. Which basically is a flat path. We were told it would take an hour to our cars. Bull shit. At 5:30 p.m. I was still struggling and hobbling along. My friendΒ BΒ  was resting at one stage when I caught up with her — she suggested I put my pack down and take a break. But I was worried if I sat down, I’d never get up again! It was back to being a mental game. I was feeling like throwing up. Feeling nauseous. I hadn’t eaten much apart from muesli for breakfast and a snack bar at lunch. The heat had affected my appetite and I certainly wasn’t hungry. I still kept drinking water and sweating buckets. Finally, about 200 to 300 metres from the finish, we saw a car. One of the walkers who had finished earlier drove to pick up a few of us. And I won’t lie — I teared up. I was in so much pain and was emotionally exhausted.

We learnt a few things from the hike — never walk in 35 degree heat for one! And also the importance of carrying a beacon just in case someone gets injured.

I got home at 9 p.m. on Sunday and went to work yesterday morning. I was sore but thought I was ok. However, after buying my morning coffee on the way to work, I started to feel nauseous. And threw up on getting to work. I thought getting some food into me would do me good. So I had my breakfast at work. Only to have it come out again. My colleagues told me I looked like shit. Which I did. I also lost 1.8 kgs on the hike {not good!!!} So I came home sick yesterday and went to the doctor. Who told me that yes, I was suffering from dehydration and heat exhaustion and that I needed to get my electrolytes back up and rest.

I slept a lot yesterday and in between two hour gaps, drank hydralyte and water. My friendΒ J also struggled with heat exhaustion and had a sick day yesterday. The doctor recommended taking the day off work today too — which last night I decided I would. I am a bit better. I have gained a kilo which tells me my fluids are getting back up. But I still don’t have much of an appetite and am forcing myself to eat.

All in all, it was a memorable hike but not one I’ll be doing again in the heat! It has been recommended to do it over autumn or spring and I think I prefer that idea. It is a battle for sure!

      Welcome here Rajlakshmi! Even though it was only 29 kms in total, it felt like a lot longer thanks to all the different terrains! And yes, there is a sense of accomplishment after it all…

    The overall trip sounds like a lot of fun, but the trek was so strenuous!! I can’t even imagine doing something like that.. Kudos to you!! And I hope you’re feeling better now! Take care and recover soon!

      Yeah it was strenuous because of the lack of a proper track and the heat! Even though we have done 29 – 30 ks in a day in the past, the tracks have not been this difficult! Feeling better now though… πŸ™‚

      Oh yeah…we all had battle scars in the end. It was a huge accomplishment but I don’t think it hit me then. We were just so over it all that it was good to just get home and have a hot shower!

    I hope you’re feeling better! Losing 1.8 Kg due to dehydration in a single day is crazy. Day 1 sounds like it was a rewarding experience, and day 2… wow! Glad you pulled through that!

      Definitely feeling a lot better now Vivienne! And yeah, losing all that weight because of loss of fluids is nuts! I’ve put on a kilo back and never thought I would see the day when I was excited to put on weight! πŸ˜›

    PB, The pictures are just brilliant. But it’s quite upsetting to hear about your “strenuous” escapades and adventures. I’ve been on two treks and though I had promised after the first one that I wouldn’t do it again, I still went ahead and did the second. It’s loads of fun especially when done with the right people. But yes, the heat can be quite the killer. Hope you recuperate well and soon πŸ˜€

      I go bushwalking quite often Sid…this time though, the track and the heat together got to me. We’ve walked 30 kms in a day in the past but the track hasn’t been this bad! So yeah, I think it was a combination of both…but I’m feeling a lot better this evening and have put on a kilo…which tells me fluids are back up! πŸ™‚

    Woaaaaa! the pics are lovely but the scars aren’t. Hiking in the heat and without much food in the belly has made you sick. Take care and rest.

      Welcome here Josefa! Yep definitely bad for the body in addition to the scars obtained during the hike! But fortunately, my fluids are back up now and I’ve gained a kilo. Never thought I’d see the day when I would be happy to gain weight! But then again, I never intended to ever lose weight in this manner either…

    I wish I got out bush walking more often, but with kids it’s more of a search and rescue most of the time. Although I’d love to lose that weight, (sorry I know it wasn’t a good thing) And OUCH for scratches! x

      I’m sure when the kids are a little older you could do some easier ones. A lady in my bookclub has a 6 yo and 5 yo and does short fun ones with them. Haha…I know a few others who said they’d love to have lost the weight but I was mainly fluids. πŸ™‚

    I started reading this and I was wishing that I could have a camp nite like that. Then I read about something that I dread! Walking! I avoid trekking at all costs. Heat or winter! πŸ™ I hope you are feeling better now. But I must say, it must have been quite an experience! Take Care.

      Haha…well most of our camps involve trekking to the campsite…it is fun though. The heat made it not-so-fun this time.
